Preacher Pink Video

The photo above smells like the studio. It's part of the revolving/evolving still-life that sits on top of the playback monitors. It's a sort of an indicator of what's to come on those days when we go back and "check the tape" from the day before. It's really the best way to work. One night, we made this video using the cameras on our phones, some lightbulbs... a projector. Greg Slamen picked the parts that didn't have index fingers over the lenses and edited them together, pretty nicely, I'd say. The little blob in the sink is strawbery jam/jelly. The sky shot projected in the background was from an airplane over San Diego/Birmingham. The man in the bathrobe walks his dog/dogs down to that corner every night and flicks a butt into the street. He does it every night. I think he is a writer or something. (But, then, I thought I was sitting next to a table of senators the other day at the foodcourt, but I realized upon eavesdropping that they were sportscoat salesmen on break from The Men's Warehouse. So, what do I know?)
The lip-synching is real. (Club Silencio!) The song is Preacher Pink. The pink bathroom in the opening shot has been in every Through the Sparks video ever made. Why stop now?
Please... Buy the record. We are trying to make some bread to put out the next one/ones.
Thanks for listening.

More to come.

Shalome,

ALAMALIBU EP

Finally, Through the Sparks' "Alamalibu" EP is printed and ready to go. We're pleased to make it available for early purchase to those of you who've once signed our mailing list and have been with us for a while. Everything was done in-house again, cover-art and all, so we dubbed it "Alamalibu," the name of our studio.

Everything, that is, except for the mastering (but that would be like doing home-dental-work and we've learned our lesson in that respect.)

Click on the cover below to make the purchase from Skybucket Records.

We are squirming to play some shows to bring this to you live soon, but more on that later as things develop. But for now, decalcify your pineal glands on this, if you will.

Thanks for listening. More to come.

Rapture Day Soundtrack from us.

It's rapture day. Here's one to listen to while you ascend. I, for one, will be wearing a parachute.
Demo from some of the new stuff, unreleased without permission, etc. Get it quick before someone makes me take it down.

It's called Body Snatchers. One of my favorite performances by Brother Watson on his Telecaster.

See you in Paradise,

SHHHHH! Secret Stages is next weekend.

I don't think it should be a secret, but apparently it is. Next weekend, a new festival in Birmingham will emerge showcasing local, region and a few national bands and comedians called Secret Stages.

We are excited to partake in this maiden voyage. On May 13th, Through the Sparks will be performing on the Miller Light stage at 10:15pm, opening for the Love Language (who personally I can't wait to see).

Also, tied in with this concernt, some local weekly newspapers have written some very generous things about us. Please have a read and blush with us.

December - Squares

So, this concludes our year of creating a song every month and releasing it free of charge. We haven't figured out the catch for 2011, but it does entail releasing a proper record that's been in the works in addition to the singles this year. If the ship comes in, we'll do our version of a "tour" or three.
Here's one of the tunes we were working on for the next "official" record. It's called "Squares."
It seemed to tie all these singles together into an album, so we went ahead and finished it this month; it's a sneak peak at how the next one will sound.
Everything is live except the obnoxiously-loud overdubbed guitar. I'm sure you'll pick it out when it wet willies you in both ears.
Also... on a lot of tracks that we record in the summer there are audible crickets/cicadas on the quiet tracks. Not this one. The insects in the intro are actually a Hammond organ with a single drawbar setting, running through a Mooger Fooger module that uses a random oscillation to create the pulse. If you listen hard, you can hear the insects actually changing with the key of the song. Happy New Year, ladies and gentlemen.

Stay sane,

-- Jody

New single for November.

The title of this song came from an Alamalibu session with some old friends. The Company Car got home intact. Others did not.
To you, Ophelia...

It's another free download in the Singles 2010 series.

October Single

Here's a new song for October. It's called "Chisel and Pick."
What began as a fleeting, recreational psychosis -- addressing man's cosmic slavery to the celestial pull -- got stuck that way, with the addition of a horn section that went completely bananas -- thus making strange sense of the whole thing.
Guest stars: TTS Drummer Emeritus Thomas Mimikakis is on the skins on this one, which was started back in 2009. The upright bass that comes in is played by Birmingham's own Van Hollingsworth of the Magic Math. Horns are arranged, of course, by Chad Fisher.
It took attempting four different studio versions of this one -- over about three years -- to arrive at a deliverable product.
The guitars on the break were all cut on a weird little Epiphone hollowbody that is now possessed by super-engineer/producer Lynn Bridges. Hey, Lynn, probably ought to get that back soon.
Also, once saw Lee Bains of the Dexateens and etc. cover this one at an acoustic thing. Might have inspired the last verse.
In other words, "This mess for is you, Birmingham."

Love,

Jody

Just want to write a note of thanks to WOJB 88.9 in Hayward, WI for playing so many of our tunes on their fine radio station.

Let us know if there's anything we can do to repay the favor.

It looks as if they've already spun the September single, "Bermuda Blades". Pretty dang cool.

And if there are others out there in the ether spinning our creations, big hugs and thanks from all of us here at TTS headquarters.

Vroom,

Bermuda Blades

The single for September is up. It's called Bermuda Blades. We had Alamalibu's go-to horn arranger, Chad Fisher, in the studio working on one of his projects and were able to get him to put down a trombone section on this tune we cut last week. You can stream it or download it free here.
All of the bass on this song is actually played on an electric guitar through some fancy eq. The drum is also a guitar, as is the guitar.
The lyrics were isnpired by this insane story, that is entirely too vast to get into here. But, not unlike imagining Bob Dylan sitting down to watch an episode of say, Roseanne, I was intrigued by the fact that even America's premier Rocket scientist with an Anti-christ complex and an obsession with producing a "moon child" also had to care for his sunny California lawn.

"The Challenger II" Free August single up now!

Just met the end of August in the nick of time. This one is called "The Challenger II."
Everything that sounds like a synthesizer is James on a Hammond with only the percussion tabs down, running pre-Leslie into a spring reverb unit. Anything else that sounds like a synthesizer is one of our out-of-tune pianos mixing with modulated tape-echo electric guitar "pads."
Maybe by next month, we'll get one of these pianos tuned up. We're still saving to have all the keys replaced with genuine ivory before we even approach their innards.
Get the new song here.

"40-Watt Lies" New Single

Here is a song inspired, vaguely, by Sam Lightnin' Hopkins' tune "Awful Dream." Love to post a video of Mr. Hopkins' song, via the web, but there doesn't seem to be one out there. If anybody has anything, let us know.

But, if you want to find out what the song does not sound like, or if you've heard it and want to wonder what in the Hell we think our tune has in common with it, you can hear the new Through the Sparks single "40-Watt Lies" here. It's free to download, as are the other free singles from this year. This one is a personal favorite, so far.

Happy hot-ass summer,

June Single of the Month is Available.

So, folks. New song available on our Singles record. It's called "Spun Headlong Into the Wild Black Yonder". This song was a bit of a challenge because we limited ourselves to only guitars and all electric at that. Well, along with bass and drums of course.

We were going for the big-but-recorded-in-a-garage-sort-of-sound. In other words, trashy yet listenable. Hope we got near that concept.

"Enemies!" ... Free New Single for May 2010

New FREE single for May is up. It's called "Enemies" and you can get for free here.
Scroll down to the "Singles" album, where you see the same cover image that is over to the right of this text... (The picture was taken in the abandoned office building upstairs from Birmingham's Vaudeville-era Lyric Theater. More on that later.)

This makes number five of the monthly singles. Meanwhile, we've finished three more for the next record. We've reconfigured the studio for recording almost entirely live. Hopefully, this'll come through on the recordings.

Meanwhile, Worm Moon Waning is still up for free download. If you haven't gotten it yet, the FREE part is getting close to running out. We're awaiting the arrival of the CDs, and we'll be selling those here, as well as from the Skybucket Records web site, where you can buy copies of the rest of the catalog.

Thanks for listening.

More to come.
